Churches along the river

Ever since St Columba converted Brude, the king of the Picts, at his fortress near the River Ness in 565 AD, Christianity has played an important role in the life of Inverness. The church spires which are such a feature of the riverside are testimony to the city's Christian heritage. The leaflet 'Churches along the River' was created in 2006 by the nine riverside churches as an invitation to stroll among the churches along the river. On this website you will find further information about these churches. We invite you to explore their history and architecture, and learn more about the churches as you follow links to their own websites. Perhaps you will even come and visit us, meet the people who worship in these buildings today, and experience a warm Highland welcome!

Our nine churches come from a broad range of traditions- Presbyterian (Church of Scotland and Free Church of Scotland), Roman Catholic, Episcopalian (Anglican) and Methodist. You can find out some more about how these different traditions came to be at scottishchristian.com (opens in new window) or by going to our Churches page.
